First, would you buy an organic egg? It may seem that way but the fact is you’d have to wait weeks for the product to make it to you, and some of them, especially organic, will be high priced. Organic means better than conventional and that’s good enough for some people. But why?

Organic producers face fewer regulations, though there are still plenty. What are the regulations and what are the food practices required? How do you know which farms that sell to you are in compliance? There are so many things to look for.

Second, would you buy the eggs or the finished product and produce healthier food? As far as the source of the egg, organic or not, is concerned, the eggs you buy come from either hens that are fed untreated corn or they are housed in flocks that aren’t allowed to produce eggs for a full two months out of the year. (It’s also a good idea to watch which types of chickens you buy, the way they are kept, and how they are fed and cared for, as well. You should not want to be feeding your chickens the antibiotics that are used to kill beneficial bacteria.)

That’s one of the issues facing organic farmers. They can’t afford to treat their flocks. These are the same reasons that many organic farmers are choosing organic to raise their chickens, to avoid the pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other chemicals that are available. Which leaves them with little or no alternative but to choose less effective chickens, or to keep the feed simpler.

In addition, they can’t afford to employ the same practices that have resulted in an increasing demand for more quality, more affordable, and more edible eggs, which are driving up prices and are shrinking the supply. So, how can you tell the difference between organic and non-organic? And what would that have to do with your health?

Because organic and non-organic animals are kept the same way, both are raised under the same set of rules. Organic farmers have more quality control than conventional farmers. They use more efficient housing systems to keep their flock healthy, and they have a deeper understanding of the factors that contribute to higher egg production.

Do you recognize the great source of protein, you are about to buy? The good news is that they are all naturally fresh and very low in fat. (They are also rich in nutrients like proteins, calcium, iron, and so much more.) The negative is that you get the same balanced, high protein diets, but in smaller quantities, which means you have to eat more eggs.

Another important aspect of organic eggs is the environment. You’ll pay more at the supermarket, because you can’t hide the fact that your eggs are organic. But you will save money by buying only organically raised chickens, or you can just pick the less expensive ones.

In addition, there are more than one million acres of organic farmland in the United States. Organic eggs cost more than those from conventional farms, but the value is more than offset by the enormous increase in production. More eggs produced is a good thing. It will mean more eggs for you, for your family, and the world.

Even so, there are many other great sources of protein besides eggs. Soybeans, for example, are a good source of protein, and many types of meat are actually made from soybeans. There are some great sources of protein in all foods that have fewer, if any, harmful chemicals or additives than traditional foods, and if you’re counting on one type of protein, and only one kind, you’ve got it right.
